How do search engines and social media algorithms work? (Basic Guide)

What are search engines and algorithms? Discover how Google, YouTube, and social media platforms work behind the scenes to rank your content.

How do search engines and social media algorithms work?
(Basic Guide)

Have you ever wondered how the best website comes to the top when you search for something on Google? Or how YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and Pinterest know which video to show you at that moment? Or what content to show, all this is not magic, but a game of search engines and algorithms. If you work on the Internet, then this guide will change your thinking and you will definitely try to improve your work.
Search Engine: This is a huge digital librarian of the internet world, like Google or YouTube, whose job is to collect and organize the entire world's information in one place so that whenever someone searches for something, it finds it and brings it to the fore.

Algorithm: This is the formula or set of rules that run in the brain of a search engine. It is not a platform itself, but rather a hidden mathematical system that decides what to show first and what to show tenth.
The main difference between the two
  • A search engine is like a car that takes you to your destination, while an algorithm is the engine and steering of that car that determines the speed and route the car will take.
  • A search engine only collects and stores data, while an algorithm weighs this data, checks its quality, and ranks it based on user behavior.
🎯 In simple terms: a search engine is the store where you go to find things, and an algorithm is the clever manager of that store that arranges the best products according to the customer's preferences and puts them on the front counter.

🚀 How do search engine and social media algorithms work?

📌 Most people know that “SEO makes things go up.” But the real question is, how does each platform decide what to show up next and what to suppress? Let’s take a look inside each major platform — from Google to YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Pinterest — to see what the logic really is.

🧠 How does the Google search engine work?

Google works in three stages:

1. Crawling — Google's "bots" (Googlebot) are constantly searching for new pages on the Internet, following links from one link to another. If your page doesn't get a link from anywhere, Google won't even know it exists.

2. Indexing — When a page is read, Google stores it in a huge database and tries to figure out what it's about.

3. Ranking — Google compares thousands of pages when searching. Key factors:
  • Backlinks — Other reputable sites linking to you is considered a "vote of trust"
  • E-E-A-T — How experienced and trustworthy the writer is
  • User Signals — If people open a page and immediately leave (bounce), rankings drop
  • RankBrain (AI) — Since 2015, Google has been trying to understand search intent using machine learning, not just matching words

🎥 What is the YouTube algorithm like inside?

YouTube's algorithm actually consists of two separate systems:

Search Algorithm — When someone types in a search, YouTube looks for matches between the title, description, and the words spoken within the video (via Speech-to-Text).

Recommendation Algorithm (the most powerful part) — Over 70% of YouTube views actually come not from search, but from “Suggested Videos” and the Home Feed. This is a neural network that predicts what each user will like based on their individual history. Two things weigh the most in it:

Watch Time — how long and what percentage of the video was watched

Session Duration — whether the user left YouTube or continued to watch more videos after watching your video

So YouTube’s real goal is not to “give the right answer” but to “keep the user on YouTube.” That’s why CTR (click-through rate on thumbnails) and Retention (how long they stayed) are at the heart of the algorithm.

📸 How does the Instagram algorithm work from the inside?

There is no single algorithm: Feed, Reels, Explore and Stories all have separate filters and models.

Snowball testing system: Your post is first tested with a few hundred people (Test Audience). Only after it is successful there, it is expanded to a larger circle.

Saves and Shares are the most powerful: "Save" and "Share" are the most valuable signals for Instagram, because they indicate informative content, beyond ordinary entertainment.

Interest Graph (user preference): The algorithm understands that you are interested in the post on the topic you stop scrolling on and brings you similar content.

🎵 How does the TikTok algorithm work?

For You Page (FYP) Testing: Each new video is shown to only a few hundred people at first. If they like it, the video goes on to a larger group (loop).

Completion Rate (the most important signal): Completion Rate and re-watches are TikTok’s most powerful formula.

No Follower Cap: TikTok doesn’t test an account’s followers, but rather each video individually. That’s why even a small account can go viral overnight.

Watch Behavior: The algorithm notes, in seconds, whether a user has paused on a video or has immediately skipped ahead.

👥 Basic principles of the Facebook algorithm:

Meaningful Social Interactions: Facebook's system is based on "meaningful social interactions", where comments and shares are given more value than likes.

Friends & Family Prioritization: Posts from friends and family are given more priority than pages.

Dwell Time: The time a user spends on a post (even if they don't like it) is called "dwell time" and Facebook also measures it.

📌 How does the Pinterest algorithm work from the inside?

Visual & Textual SEO: This is a visual search engine that determines rankings by scanning image elements, titles, descriptions, and related boards.

Evergreen Content: Posts here have a long lifespan. Posts don't "die" quickly like on Facebook/Instagram, but generate traffic for years.

Repins (the biggest signal): When people save your pin to their boards, the credibility of your content increases in the eyes of the algorithm.

Taste Graph: The algorithm tracks the user's search history and saved pin hooks to create a feed based on their personal tastes.

Sustainable Traffic: It is the best platform to drive long-term traffic to blogs, websites, and products because it supports external links.

💡 The Ultimate Gold Rule:

The algorithm doesn't read anything:The algorithm doesn't 'feel' your content, it only measures user behavior.

Platform Goal: Every platform wants to keep its users happy. If humans are liking your content, the algorithm is forced to push it forward.

🎯 In simple terms: Write for humans, target the algorithm.
